Health Sciences Centre Adult Eating Disorders Program

This is a government-funded, hospital-based treatment program at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg. It serves Manitoba residents of all genders aged 18 and older. It includes assessment and treatment of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and disordered eating.

Note: A doctor or nurse practitioner must refer you to this service.

 Treatment Options

Outpatient Day Hospital Program

A comprehensive group-based treatment program from Monday through Thursday (8 am – 6 pm) and Friday (8 am – 2 pm).  Participants return home on evenings and weekends. It includes meals and snacks with support provided by treatment team members. A variety of therapeutic groups address:

  • coping skills
  • self-esteem
  • body image
  • relationships
  • life skills
  • recreation
  • nutrition (including meal preparation practice)

Inpatient Program

The inpatient program is at the PsychHealth Centre at Health Sciences Centre and provides medical stabilization and nutritional recovery. Once particpants are medically stable, they take part in the Day Hospital Program, first as an inpatient and then as an outpatient.

Outpatient Cognitive Behaviour Therapy

A less intentsive treatment option for those who are medically stable and who do not require meal support. Participants attend a weekly two-hour group for 21 weeks. This group is offered twice a year – September – January and February – June.

Group topics include:

  • normal eating
  • coping skills
  • self-esteem
  • assertiveness
  • body image
  • relapse prevention

Other Services

Family Support

Family support services are available to participants in any of the treatment options above. These may include:

  • family meetings during treatment
  • family and friends group – a weekly, four-week group offered twice a year that provides education and support to family members and/or friends of the participant

Individual Services

Individual services are available after the program is completed. They may include:

  • individual counselling
  • life skills
  • nutrition counselling,
  • family meetings

What to Expect

When we receive your referral, an eating disorders specialist will contact you for a telephone interview (about 30 minutes) to learn about your concerns.

After your interview, you will receive information about the program. You will then be contacted to schedule an assessment appointment at Health Sciences Centre.

At the assessment, you will provide a more detailed history of your concerns. Together with the eating disorder specialist, you’ll discuss the treatment option best for you.
